Commemoration Event for Holocaust Victims
January 23, 2025
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, the National Museum of History of Moldova, in partnership with Agudath Israel in Moldova and the Romanian Cultural Institute "Mihai Eminescu," is organizing an event dedicated to the International and National Day of Commemoration of Holocaust Victims on January 23, 2025, starting at 16:00, in the museum's Diorama.
During the event, the exhibition titled "Humanity Without Borders" will be inaugurated, honoring the activities of diplomats Chiune Sempo Sugihara (Japan) and Jan Zwartendijk (Netherlands), both officially recognized as "Righteous Among the Nations" for saving thousands of Jewish lives during World War II.
Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara (1900-1986) also served in Romania from 1941 to 1944. Earlier, while posted in Lithuania, he saved thousands of Jews by granting them visas to Japan. In 1984, he was declared "Righteous Among the Nations," an honor bestowed by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem to non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews. International media referred to Sugihara as the "Schindler of Japan."
This exhibition, curated by Sophiya Gugelev (Israel), is a tribute to those who, through their courage and humanity, changed the destinies of thousands of lives, risking their own safety in the name of solidarity and humanity.
The exhibition is organized by Agudath Israel in Moldova, in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Moldova, the Embassy of Lithuania in the Republic of Moldova, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Republic of Moldova, the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, the Agency for Interethnic Relations of Moldova, the National Holocaust Memorial Center Yad Vashem (Israel), and the "Port of Humanity, Tsuruga" Museum (Japan).
During the opening, the documentary "Kaunas - Gates of Hope" will be screened, shedding light on the chapter of human solidarity.
The "Humanity Without Borders" exhibition will be open to the public from January 23 to February 6, 2025, in the Diorama of the National Museum of History of Moldova, Chișinău, 31 August 1989, 121 A.
